How to Negotiate with Vendors Your Wedding — and Save

We know asking for what you want can be tough. But when it comes to sticking to your wedding budget, it’s a must. Negotiating with wedding vendors is a smart way to save money, and after all, you’ll never know until you try

Tips for Negotiating

Do Your Research

Start by gathering multiple quotes to understand market rates better. Sharing other vendors’ quotes during negotiation can encourage competitive pricing.
Pro Tip: Reach out to friends or acquaintances for recommendations and insights on similar services.

Communicate Your Budget

Transparency about your budget from the start reduces back-and-forth. This sets clear expectations and allows for constructive discussions. Vendors might identify areas where costs can be adjusted without sacrificing quality.

Negotiate with Newer Vendors

Newer vendors often seek to build portfolios and gain positive reviews. Being part of this growth can lead to more flexible pricing. In your initial outreach, let the vendor know you’d be willing to let them use photos of their work in their portfolio and that you’ll leave them a positive review after your big day

Ask for Itemized Quotes

Having a breakdown of costs enables you to identify areas for adjustments. For instance, with florists, you can propose alternatives that fit your budget.

Be Nice and Respectful

Maintaining a positive and respectful attitude fosters a collaborative partnership. Vendors are more inclined to go the extra mile for clients who appreciate their work.

What To Say In Your Negotiations

Our scripts can make this process a whole lot easier. Just ask and you might get what you’re looking for!! Keep in mind, though, not every place will say yes on the first try. You might need to reach out to 12-20 places before finding the right fit for your needs and budget.

Commit to sticking to your budget and get ready to think outside of the box. You’d be surprised what you can get, sometimes even for free!

Negotiating with Non Traditional Venues

Wording to use when you call a park:

“I need a space for a [small/medium/large] gathering sometime in [desired month] Can I make a reservation? What is the cost and how long can we reserve it for?”

Keep calling different parks until you get one in your budget. Some don’t cost anything!

Savings: potentially save up to $5,000 or more on a venue.

Wording to use when reserving a drive-in location for a tailgate wedding:

“I’m looking for space to tailgate/have an event on [date]. Is it possible to reserve the [lot or building name] parking lot for about xx hours? What is the cost?”

Keep calling until you find a few in your budget, then drive by them and pick the one you like best.

Savings: potentially save up to $5,000 or more on a location.

Negotiating restaurant and venue quotes

Wording to use when you negotiate a large dinner party with a restaurant:

“I’m looking to host a dinner party/rehearsal dinner for [xx number of people] at your restaurant. Do you have a pre-priced menu including drinks and dessert? We have about $xx in the budget.”

If you can’t find a restaurant within that budget, ask how many they can host at that price. Keep calling different restaurants until you find a match! You don’t have to mention it’s for a wedding reception, but you will want to make sure they will cut a cake that you bring in, how they handle bringing in outside wine (corkage fees?), and any other special considerations. You’ll also want to know if you’ll be the only party at that time, what if any entertainment is booked for that time and any other events happening at the same time.

Wording to use when looking for a wedding venue:

Be prepared to call LOTS of venues until you find a match. More important than the perfect setting is that they can accommodate the number of guests in your budget. After all, the fun of your big day is had with the people who attend.

“I’m looking to host an event for [xx number of people] at your venue. Do you have availability on [date]? Do you require we purchase food and drinks through you or can we bring our own catering and bar? Do you have a pre-priced menu including drinks and dessert? We have about $xx in the budget. How many people can we host for that?”

Negotiation areas may include catering options, liquor choices, and even the possibility of swapping out certain items to better suit your preferences. Remember to Prioritize discussions on restrictions, unaddressed details, and deal-breakers. And, of course, always be kind; your delivery can make all the difference in getting what you want.

Negotiating with Other Wedding Vendors

Wording to use when looking for a photographer or videographer:

“Capturing our special day is incredibly important to us, and we love your work. However, our budget is limited. Can we discuss a customized package that includes essential moments and perhaps a shorter time frame?”

Most skilled photographers and videographers may have flexible options, and you can negotiate based on your specific needs. You may be surprised by the creative solutions they can offer within your budget.

Savings: Potentially save up to $2,000 or more on photography and videography.

Wording to use when looking for a florist:

“We adore your floral arrangements, but we’re working with a tight budget. Could we discuss more budget-friendly flower options or perhaps a reduced arrangement size while maintaining the overall theme?”

Florists often have various flower options and can suggest alternatives that are beautiful yet economical. Be open to creative suggestions that align with your vision.

Savings: Potentially save up to $1,000 or more on floral arrangements.

Wording to use when looking for a DJ or Entertainment

“We love your music style, but our budget is limited. Can we discuss a scaled-down performance package or explore options like a DJ for part of the event? We want to find a solution that works for both parties.”

Entertainment is a significant aspect of any wedding, and many musicians and DJs are willing to customize their services to accommodate different budgets.

Savings: Potentially save up to $2,000 or more on entertainment.

More Tips to Help You Save

Efficient Planning for Cost Reduction

Consider consolidating services with vendors offering multiple services. Some vendors may provide a package deal if you hire them for both photography and videography, or catering and decorations.

Savings: Potentially save up to $1,000 or more through package deals.

Exchange Skills for Services

Explore bartering with friends or acquaintances who possess valuable skills. Maybe you have a friend with graphic design expertise who can create your invitations in exchange for another favor.

Savings: The potential for significant savings by leveraging each other’s skills.

Explore Honeyfund for Honeymoon or Wedding Expenses

Don’t forget to check out Honeyfund, where your friends and family can contribute to your honeymoon or wedding expenses. It’s a great way to offset costs and share the joy with your loved ones.

Savings: Honeyfund couples average XX contributed to their account to help offset their honeymoon costs, wedding expenses, or to put towards another savings goal.

Remember, negotiation is about finding common ground. Stay polite, be flexible, and express genuine enthusiasm for the services you are seeking. The more open and collaborative you are, the better the chances of striking a deal that suits both parties. Happy negotiating!

3 Honeymoon Getaways Under $1000

Planning an affordable honeymoon doesn’t mean compromising on the dreamy experience you’ve envisioned. Many couples, due to the misconception that a honeymoon  needs to be expensive, end up skipping this important post-wedding tradition that actually sets their marriage up for success. We’re challenging that notion and explore three fantastic honeymoon ideas, each under $1000.*

Cozy Cabin Stay in the Great Smoky Mountains

Escape to the Great Smoky Mountains for a budget-friendly honeymoon! If camping is your thing, you can stay at campsites within the national park like Cades Cove Campground for just $30 a night (May 15th – October 31st). Explore affordable hotels or Airbnb cabin rentals in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge for rustic charm that won’t break the bank.

Enjoy free outdoor activities like hiking trails with breathtaking views, wildlife spotting in Cades Cove, and ranger-led programs for insightful experiences. Save on dining by packing picnic supplies or trying restaurants in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, such as Smoky Mountain Brewery for a beer flight and Crockett’s Breakfast Camp for a hearty breakfast.

For those in the Midwest, opting for a road trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a budget-friendly choice that enhances the scenic adventure. Consider adding a “Driving Fund” registry item on your Honeyfund, allowing your guests to contribute to your gas money for the trip. It’s a practical and appreciated way for loved ones to help make your honeymoon even more memorable.

Beach Getaway to Tulum, Mexico

Looking for an affordable tropical getaway that won’t break the bank? Tulum might be your answer. Throughout the year, this Mexican paradise offers a range of all-inclusive travel deals, making it easy to keep your honeymoon budget under $1000.

Take, for instance, the Bahia Principe, a beachfront property where a night’s stay comes in at $285, and an all-inclusive junior suite, taxes included, totals around $1,100 for a 4-night stay, giving you luxury without the price tag.

But it’s not just about the accommodation. Tulum’s all-inclusive packages offer a variety of activities, from poolside entertainment to cultural shows in the evening, along with inviting river and lake-style pools. And don’t forget to use your honeymoon fund for added experiences, like a round of golf, a day trip to the Mayan Ruins, or a couple’s massage at the spa.

Flights to Cancún, particularly from major metropolitan areas like Dallas, can be surprisingly affordable, starting at around $300 per person. For the best deals, consider planning your Tulum trip during the off-season, such as September, when accommodation prices hit their lowest.

Wine Down in Temecula, California

Escape to the budget-friendly charm of Temecula, California, Southern California’s own wine country, offering Napa vibes without the hefty price tag. Find cozy Airbnb stays without breaking the bank – you can find hidden gems like a vineyard-nestled shipping container for just $100 a night. Explore affordable wine tastings at $20-$30 or opt for budget-friendly wine tours that include transportation. Don’t miss Oak Mountain Winery, boasting Southern California’s exclusive mined wine caves.

Wander through the historic Old Town Temecula for a mix of shopping and dining. Spice up your night at Coin-Op Game Room for arcade fun and indulge in delicious pizza at Goat and Vine. If time allows, take a quick drive to San Diego for a beach day. Temecula proves that a romantic and affordable wine country escape is within reach for an unforgettable honeymoon without the splurge.

*$1,000 does not include total cost of  transportation to your destination as costs vary depending on where you are traveling from.

Wedding Trends You Need to Know About for 2024

Entering 2024, couples in the midst of wedding planning may be interested in incorporating the latest trends into their big day. The great news? You can stay on trend without breaking the bank. In this ever-evolving landscape of wedding styles, we’re witnessing a blend of changing tastes, modern styles, and tech innovations. Couples are weaving their unique personalities into every aspect of their special day, creating celebrations as unique as their love stories. Let’s explore the trends set to shape weddings in 2024.

Bud Vases: Small Blooms, Big Impact

This year, practicality meets elegance with the budget-friendly trend of incorporating bud vases into wedding decor. These unassuming vessels, filled with delicate blooms, are gracing tables, providing a touch of romance without breaking the bank. Bud vases are the savvy choice for couples looking to save on floral expenses while maintaining a stylish and sophisticated ambiance that complements any wedding style, be it rustic or modern chic. Bonus – these floral arrangements can be done elegantly and beautifully by a novice, so consider finding these cute vases at a vintage or resale shop or through Facebook marketplace and purchase blooms wholesale and ask a friend to arrange them.

Honeymoon Registries: Creating Memories Beyond the Big Day

In 2024, honeymoon registries like Honeyfund, are becoming a hit for couples looking to prioritize and fund their honeymoon. Honeyfund easily blends with traditional registries, allowing couples to include experiences like romantic dinners or exciting adventures in their wishlist. The cool part? Guests can choose to contribute to these memorable experiences, giving you something more personal than a new set of sheets.  As couples lean towards more experiential gifts, honeymoon registries offer a great balance, creating memories that go beyond the wedding day.

Bows: Classic Charm Making a Comeback

Bows are making a comeback in 2024, and you’ve likely spotted them around recently – from simple touches in hairstyles to holiday decorations. This classic embellishment is redefining wedding fashion and decor, with oversized bows gracing ceremony arches and adding a sweet touch to bridal gowns and groomsmen’s attire. Beyond their traditional role in gift wrapping, bows are now becoming a symbol of the couple tying the knot, bringing a timeless and charming element to the wedding scene.

Interactive Seating Charts: Say Goodbye to Paper, Hello to Fun

Traditional seating charts are taking a back seat this year as couples embrace technology and experiences  to make things interactive. From fortune cookies or personalized letters you open upon arrival, to champagne windows, couples are injecting some fun into the process.

Blue: A Splash of Something Blue for 2024

This year, Minted and Brides.com unveiled Marseille Bleu as the go-to color for weddings. Beyond that specific shade, couples are splashing blues, from navy to sky blue,  across their palettes. Blue isn’t just a color; it’s a symbol of trust, loyalty, and depth, making it the perfect choice for couples who want to infuse their celebration with meaning.

Smaller Guest Lists and Budgets: Quality over Quantity

In 2024, the wedding scene is all about quality over quantity. Couples are choosing smaller guest lists, creating more intimate ceremonies that shine a spotlight on their unique love story. Every guest becomes an essential part of the celebration, fostering meaningful connections.

According to “The Wedding Report,” this trend is reflected in the numbers, with a 16% decrease in guest counts and a 17% reduction in wedding budgets. Smaller gatherings not only align with practical budget considerations but also contribute to a more personal and engaging atmosphere. In 2024, couples are embracing the beauty of simplicity, creating weddings that are not just financially sensible but also deeply significant and memorable.

Wedding Photo Sharing: Snap, Share, and Celebrate Together

In today’s social media era, sharing wedding photos is a must. Couples are making it easy by using apps and QR codes to encourage guests to share their snapshots online. It’s not just about capturing the moment; it’s about creating a shared experience that everyone can be part of.

Meaningful Favors: Are All About The Guests

In 2024, wedding favors are taking on a more meaningful twist that puts an emphasis on the guests rather than just the couple. Couples are opting for gifts that align with their values and interests, such as watercolor portraits or couple photos of the guests. They’re steering clear of favors with the couple’s names or wedding date, leaning towards items that are consumable or practical – something guests will genuinely use for years to come. This thoughtful upgrade is a small yet impactful expression of gratitude, leaving a lasting impression on guests and making the gesture more memorable.

Content Creation: Documenting the Love Story

In 2024, couples are becoming storytellers, documenting their wedding day by hiring a day-of content creator to take over their phones. They’re capturing behind-the-scenes footage and narrating their love story in unique and innovative ways. This approach gives couples instant access to the day’s footage without delay, allowing them to relive and share their special moments effortlessly.

Simple Bouquets: Less is More

When it comes to bridal bouquets, less is definitely more in 2024. Brides are opting for simple arrangements that showcase the natural beauty of the blooms. Loose, hand-tied bouquets with a touch of greenery are stealing the spotlight, adding a dash of organic elegance to the overall wedding vibe.

Drivable Honeymoons: Local Love

In 2024, honeymoon plans are taking a turn towards local exploration rather than far-off destinations. Newlyweds are favoring drivable honeymoons to uncover hidden gems nearby. Interestingly, in 2023, driving fun emerged as the top item registered on Honeyfund, signaling a trend towards more accessible and enjoyable travel experiences. Notably, contributions towards home down payments, which topped the list in 2022, dropped out of the top 10 for couples getting married in 2023. Instead, there’s a clear preference for prioritizing honeymoon funds over home funds. Couples seem to be opting for minimoons closer to home, potentially saving up for a larger international trip later in the year.

In 2024, weddings are a beautiful blend of tradition and contemporary flair. From intimate ceremonies to honeymoon registries, to thoughtful details like bud vases and bows, couples are crafting celebrations that resonate with their unique love stories.

Honeyfund 2023 Recap: Top Trends in Honeymoons, Registries, and Wedding Gifting

As we say goodbye to 2023, we’re unveiling some of the key trends that have shaped the landscape of Honeyfund weddings and honeymoons. At Honeyfund, we don’t just observe these trends; we intimately understand them through our couples. As the most trusted honeymoon and cash registry, our insights reflect a deep connection with our couples and their preferences. From the allure of Italy to evolving wedding gift preferences and a glimpse into the future, here’s our comprehensive wrap-up.

Italy Steals the Honeymoon Spotlight

Italy has become the favorite of honeymoon destinations, winning over 3.6% more Honeyfund couples in 2023 compared to the previous year. Surprise, surprise! Italy now shares the spotlight with Hawaii as a top honeymoon pick. Looking ahead to 2024, it seems the magic of Italy is still going strong, with an equal number of couples opting for the romantic charm of Italy and the tropical allure of Hawaii.

Top US Honeymoon Picks: Orlando, Vegas, and Alaska

While Italy steals the global spotlight, within the US, honeymoon trends take a different turn. Orlando, Vegas, and Alaska emerge as top choices for couples seeking varied experiences, from the enchantment of theme parks to the lively vibes of the Strip and the untamed beauty of the Last Frontier.

The Gift Game: A Notable Shift

Gift-giving has undergone a subtle but noticeable change. While the number of gifts remained steady from 2022 to 2023, the average value per gift took a leap, reaching an average of $141 for couples in 2023. What does this tell us? Well, it seems friends and family are not just sticking to tradition; they’re willing to splurge a bit more to keep up with the rising cost of living.

Budgets, Honeymoons, and Changing Priorities

Look ahead to a wedding boom characterized by a twist in budget trends. Recent data shows an increase in honeymoon budgets, contrasting with a decrease in wedding budgets. Couples are breaking away from tradition, favoring longer and more exotic honeymoons over costly engagement rings.

Goodbye, Home Down Payment Contributions

2023 witnessed a significant shift in what couples prioritize in their wedding registries. Unlike the trend in 2022, where contributions towards home down payments were dominant, this year’s couples are placing a greater emphasis on acquiring funds for transportation—specifically, for their travel plans. IIs it because of the tough housing market and unpredictable mortgage rates? Honeyfund CEO, Sara Margulis, sums it up: “With the current housing market, investing in experiences seems more doable and fulfilling.”

Peeking into 2024: Engagements, Guest Lists, and Budgets

Data from external sources and our own surveys  hint at what’s coming. Expect more engagements in 2024, alongside smaller guest lists, tighter budgets, and a preference for intimate ceremonies. Our survey shows a 5% decrease in 2023 bookings and a further 9% decrease in 2024 bookings, with wedding businesses reporting a 16% decrease in guest counts and a 17% decrease in couples’ wedding budgets.

Reflecting on the trends that defined 2023, one thing is clear: love, celebration, and adventure are evolving in exciting ways. Whether it’s an intimate gathering or a grand celebration, the journey of love stays diverse and vibrant. Looking ahead, as couples adapt priorities and budgets, Honeyfund commits to being a practical and supportive way to turn honeymoon dreams into reality.

A Guide to Choosing the Perfect Engagement Ring

Picking out an engagement ring isn’t what it used to be. Over the years, the process has evolved, and now it’s all about making it personal. Couples today are taking charge of the journey, crafting an experience that suits them.

In this blog post, we’re exploring the modern approach to ring shopping. We’ll chat about how things have changed over the years, how the process looks different for everyone, and what to consider when diving into this adventure. Whether you’re thinking of choosing the ring together, going for ethically sourced options, exploring budget-friendly picks, or trying something totally out of the box, this guide is here to kickstart your journey. Let’s get started on finding that perfect ring that tells your story!

Consider Ring Shopping Together

One of the emerging trends in engagement ring shopping is the act of choosing the ring together. Instead of opting for the traditional surprise proposal, this approach ensures both partners are actively involved in the decision-making process. It’s an opportunity to create shared memories and select a ring that resonates with both your styles and preferences.

Research Ethical Options

As ethical and sustainable practices gain importance, more couples are seeking engagement rings that align with their values. Look for jewelers committed to fair labor practices and conflict-free materials. Choosing an ethically made ring not only adds a deeper layer of meaning but also contributes to social and environmental responsibility.

Determine Your Budget

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to break the bank for a stunning engagement ring. Explore alternative gemstones, like sapphires or morganite, and consider lab-grown diamonds for a more budget-friendly yet equally stunning option. Choosing different metals can also impact the overall cost, allowing you to find a ring that fits your budget without compromising on style.

Browse Unique Rings and Alternatives

A diamond ring isn’t for everyone. Think outside the traditional diamond ring box and explore unique alternatives. Consider gemstones with personal significance, vintage or antique options for a touch of history, or even non-traditional materials like wood or meteorite. Embrace creativity and customization to ensure the ring tells your love story in a way that’s as unique as your relationship.

Allow Time for Order and Creation

Keep in mind that the process of ordering and creating a custom engagement ring takes time. Whether you’re choosing a unique design or waiting for an ethically sourced stone, factor in the time it takes for production and delivery. This can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the complexity of the design. Plan ahead to avoid unnecessary stress and ensure the ring is ready for your special moment.

Think About Protecting Your Investment

Once you’ve found the perfect ring, it’s a good ideal to protect your investment. Consider getting insurance for the engagement ring to safeguard against loss, theft, or damage. Many insurance providers offer specific policies for jewelry, and adding your ring to your existing homeowner’s or renter’s insurance is a common practice. Knowing your ring is insured provides peace of mind and allows you to fully enjoy the symbol of your commitment.

Understanding Diamonds: Decoding the 4 Cs and More

You don’t have to pick a diamond ring, but if you decide to go for a classic diamond, let’s dive into the specifics of choosing a diamond that fits your budget.

Cut: Brilliance is in the Precision

The cut of a diamond dictates its sparkle, with well-cut diamonds enhancing natural brilliance. Grades range from excellent to poor, impacting how light reflects within the stone.

Clarity: Seeing Beyond Imperfections

Clarity assesses internal (inclusions) and external (blemishes) flaws. Higher clarity grades mean fewer and less noticeable imperfections, contributing to a more flawless appearance.

Color: A Spectrum of Brilliance

Diamonds come in a range of colors, from colorless (D) to light yellow or brown (Z). The further down the scale you go, the more warm your diamond is. Personal preference plays a role; some prefer colorless, while others appreciate a hint of warmth.

Carat: Balancing Size and Quality

Carat weight measures diamond size, but balance is key. A smaller, well-cut diamond can be as stunning as a larger one. It’s also becoming more popular to choose a thin band, also known as a “whisper” band to make the diamond appear larger. Consider your partner’s style and overall ring design for the perfect fit.

Choosing an engagement ring is a milestone worth celebrating in a way that feels right for you. Whether you opt for a collaborative ring selection, choose an ethically made piece, explore budget-friendly alternatives, or go for a unique design, the key is to make a choice that resonates with your values. Your engagement ring should tell your love story, embodying the commitment and uniqueness of your relationship.

10 Tips for An Environmentally-Friendly Wedding

As you navigate the countless decisions involved in wedding planning, remember that your big day can also be an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to our planet. In this blog post, we’ll explore 10 sustainable wedding choices, providing practical insights, tips, and inspiration to help you create a beautiful and eco-conscious celebration. Even embracing just a handful of these ideas can create a significant and lasting impact!

Tip 1: Choose a Sustainable Wardrobe

When crafting your wedding attire, prioritize sustainability to minimize your wedding’s environmental impact. Explore second hand stores for pre-loved dresses, consider renting tuxedos, support local and ethical designers, and opt for eco-friendly accessories. For a sustainable shoe choice for you and your bridal party, we recommend HEYDUDE, a stylish wedding shoe that prioritizes comfort. By choosing HEYDUDE shoes for your big day, your feet can look and feel good from the morning wedding preparations, to the time they close the dancefloor. Whether you’re looking for a white pair to match your dress, or a patterned style to gift the wedding party, there’s a perfect pair for everyone. Bonus: you’ll also be able to wear these long after your wedding day, making them a more sustainable option over a pair of shoes you’ll only wear on your wedding day!

Tip 2: Choose Local Ingredients

Your caterer is likely open to the idea of incorporating local ingredients into your menu, and they might even embrace the opportunity if it’s not already a standard practice for them. Opting for locally sourced ingredients not only guarantees the freshest flavors but also reduces the environmental impact of transportation. By choosing local, you’ll help minimize the need for extensive journeys by planes, trains, and automobiles to bring the finest ingredients to your beautiful event.

Tip 3: Choose Local Flowers

While peonies may be your absolute favorite (and who can blame you?), consider skipping them if you’re tying the knot in November. The environmental toll of shipping flowers like these  across the globe during the off-season just doesn’t add up. Instead, explore using locally grown flowers, which you can undoubtedly find wherever your wedding is taking place.

If local blooms are in short supply, another option worth considering is the use of satin or faux florals. You’d be amazed at how convincingly they mimic real flowers, and the added benefit is a reduction in waste, as you won’t be discarding old bouquets and arrangements. This choice combines sustainability with lasting beauty for your special day.

Tip 4: Drink Local

Ask your bartending or catering service to seek out locally sourced ingredients for fresh mixers and garnishes in the cocktails at your wedding. Elevate your bar experience further by stocking local beer and wine, enhancing the sustainability of your event while delighting your guests with the flavors of the region. Don’t forget to include a recycling bin for bottles and cans to ensure responsible waste management throughout your celebration.

Tip 5: Reuse

When it comes to your wedding decor, instead of going for brand new items or DIY projects, why not explore borrowing or purchasing from others? Check out Facebook Marketplace and join local Facebook groups where brides often share items they’ve used once for their own weddings. This way, you can create an eco-friendly and budget-friendly atmosphere for your special day, no DIY projects required!

Tip 6: Go Paperless

While your grandma might cherish a physical copy of your wedding invites for her scrapbook, the traditional route of printing and mailing invitations isn’t the most eco-friendly choice. Step into your eco-conscious era by going paperless for your wedding invitations and programs. Opting for digital invites not only adds a modern and convenient touch to your wedding planning, complete with easy RSVP tracking, but it also dramatically reduces your event’s environmental footprint. By skipping paper production and transportation, you’ll make a sustainable choice that’s kind to our planet. It’s a great way to keep your guests informed while saving a few trees along the way.

Tip 7: Explore Ecotourism for Your Honeymoon

Take an unforgettable honeymoon that not only celebrates your love but also the wonders of our planet. Ecotourism, a travel trend dedicated to exploring exotic and often threatened natural environments, offers the perfect opportunity to support conservation efforts and observe wildlife. Costa Rica, a trailblazer in ecotourism, boasts an abundance of protected lands to explore, making it an ideal destination for eco-conscious honeymooners. But the beauty of ecotourism doesn’t stop there; other remarkable destinations like Norway, Kenya, the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, and Brazil are also great destinations.  Immerse yourselves in the magic of nature while creating lasting memories together.

Tip 8: Consciously Select Your Location

Opting for an eco-friendly wedding venue or using nature, such as a national park, as your backdrop is a unique and thoughtful choice that combines love with sustainability. By selecting a venue with eco-friendly practices or exchanging vows in the beauty of the great outdoors, you can reduce the need for elaborate decorations. Nature itself becomes your decor, offering a stunning backdrop that not only lessens the environmental impact but also showcases the natural world’s beauty.

Tip 9: Carpool

Promote eco-friendly transportation by encouraging your guests to carpool or use ridesharing services like Uber or  Lyft for your wedding. A convenient way to convey this option is through your wedding website, a printed insert included with your wedding invitation, or a note within your electronic invitation to save paper. Additionally, consider carpooling for meetings with family or your wedding planner – it not only reduces carbon emissions but also creates extra productive car time to discuss all the exciting wedding details.

Tip 10: Pick a Greener Registry

Why not embrace a greener approach to your registry? Choose Honeyfund to register for gift cards or unforgettable experiences for your honeymoon instead of traditional gifts wrapped in excess packaging. Simplifying not only minimizes waste but also aligns your celebration with eco-friendly values, while also encouraging your guests to contribute to your epic honeymoon plans!

The Ultimate Guide to Taking The Best Wedding Photos

Your wedding day is a significant moment, one you’ll think back on for years. But the photos you take on that day are the concrete reminders of all the big and small details. They’re not just pictures; they become family keepsakes, connecting future generations to your love story. So, it’s completely normal to take your time in choosing the right photographer, exploring your preferred photography style, and making sure your photos will be cherished for years to come. Whether you’re using a wedding photography professional or a friend and family member with an eye for photography, this guide will help you take the best wedding photos and ensure you have plenty of captured memories to enjoy.

To help you stay organized and on track, here is a free PDF Wedding Shot List, created with help from a real wedding photographer that you can easily share with your photographer. Download it here.

Plan Ahead

One of the most crucial aspects of ensuring you get the best wedding photos is to plan ahead. A well-organized shot list will be your guiding light on the big day. Collaborate with your partner and your photographer to discuss your expectations and the key moments you want to capture. Create a comprehensive shot list that outlines essential moments like the first look, ring exchange, and group photos. We understand that this can be a daunting task, so here’s a free PDF Wedding Shot List to simplify the process. This resource can be easily shared with your photographer to ensure that no significant moments are missed.

Choose the Right Photographer

Selecting the right photographer is a big decision. Your wedding photos are the lasting memories of your special day, and choosing the right photographer can make all the difference. If you are planning to use a wedding photography professional, start by doing thorough research, reviewing portfolios, and meeting with potential photographers to discuss your vision. You can use Honeyfund’s Wedding Vendor Directory to kickstart your search! It’s also perfectly acceptable to ask a friend or family member who has an eye for photography and a camera to help capture the moments of your wedding day. Another cost saving tip to consider is to reach out to local art schools to see if a local budding photographer would be willing to photograph your day at a fraction of the cost of a professional.

Whether you opt for a professional or choose a family member, your photographer should not only be skilled and experienced but also someone who shares your excitement for your big day. Their style should resonate with your vision of capturing the moments that matter most.

Capture Emotions

While traditional posed shots have their place, candid photos capturing genuine, unfiltered emotions are often couples’ favorites. This style, known as ‘documentary-style wedding photography,’ is gaining popularity for its authenticity. Photographers who specialize in this approach focus on capturing the unscripted story of your wedding day without intervening, allowing you to fully savor and preserve these real moments. Choosing natural photography enables you to be yourself on your big day, allowing you to fully enjoy the moment without the constant pressure of a photoshoot.

Scout the Location

Familiarity with your wedding venue can really help you express your photography vision with your photographer so they can capture the best moments.  We suggest visiting the venue ahead of time to find the best photo spots. This way, you can discover the most scenic backgrounds, making sure your pictures capture the venue’s beauty just the way you want.

Be Patient and Relaxed

On your wedding day, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind. With so much happening, it’s crucial to remember to relax and be patient. Allow your photographer to guide you and trust their expertise. When you’re at ease, it shows in your photos, resulting in more natural and beautiful shots.

Remember, while these tips will certainly help you capture breathtaking photos, the most important thing is to enjoy your day and the love you’re celebrating. With careful planning, the right photographer, and a well-thought-out shot list, you’ll have a stunning collection of memories to look back on.

Should You Change Your Name After Marriage? The Great Name Change Debate

When it comes to the decision of whether or not to change your name after marriage, there’s no right or wrong answer. It’s a personal choice that should be based on your own preferences and circumstances. However, it’s important to acknowledge that this decision can often come with a sense of pressure or expectation from both sides. Understanding the insights and experiences of others who have faced the same dilemma can help you feel more confident in making your decision. Genevieve Dennis, the founder of Easy Name Change, a kit that simplifies and expedites changing your name, shares some valuable insights into why or why not many people consider changing their names when they get married, reminding you that whatever you’re feeling, you are not alone!

Exploring The Patriarchy and Feminism Around Changing Your Name

When considering whether or not to change your name after marriage, it’s important to acknowledge the history and traditions behind changing your name. Traditionally, women in heterosexual couples have been expected to take their husband’s surname, as a symbol of leaving her family and joining her husband’s. This tradition has drawn criticism for reinforcing gender norms and a patriarchal system.

The decision to change or keep your name should not be simplified to a feminist or anti-feminist choice. It’s crucial to recognize that it can be a personal decision made from a place of empowerment, aligning with individual values and desires. Ultimately, the decision should be based on open conversations with your partner and ensuring it supports equality and respect within your relationship.

It’s also worth noting that the name change debate is not limited to heterosexual couples. Same-sex couples face similar choices and considerations regarding name changes, and the discussion extends beyond gender roles to encompass personal and relationship dynamics.

Reasons to Consider Changing Your Name

  1. Family Unity: One of the most commonly cited reasons for newlyweds to take their spouse’s surname is the desire for their whole family to share the same last name. This reason is driven by the idea of unity and a sense of belonging.
  2. Commitment to the New Family: Changing your name can be seen as a symbolic gesture of commitment to your new family. By adopting your spouse’s surname, you are expressing your dedication and readiness to embrace your future together.
  3. Tradition and Ritual: Many people have grown up with the assumption that changing names after marriage is a customary practice. If you have no personal objections to this tradition, it may not present any problem for you.
  4. Affirming Your Place in the Family: Some parents express the importance of having the same last name as their children. This can help avoid confusion or suspicion in various situations, such as at school or during travel.
  5. Creating a New Identity: For individuals who do not have a strong emotional attachment to their former name, embracing a new married name can provide an opportunity to create a fresh identity. This motivation is common among men who choose to take their spouse’s surname.

Reasons to Hesitate Changing Your Name

  1. Professional Reputation: If you have built a business or professional reputation under your pre-married name, changing it may affect recognition. This consideration is especially relevant if your work identity is closely tied to your name.
  2. Paperwork Hassle: Let’s face it – dealing with paperwork can be a tedious and time-consuming task. However, with services like Easy Name Change, the process can be significantly simplified, saving you hours of mundane paperwork and research.
  3. Separating Work and Personal Life: Some individuals prefer to keep their work and personal lives separate, including maintaining different names for each aspect. This choice allows for distinct identities and boundaries.
  4. Existing Circles and Network: If you have always been known by your pre-married name within specific social or professional circles, keeping your name consistent can make sense to maintain recognition and connections.
  5. Reluctance to Part with Your Identity: It’s not uncommon to have a deep attachment to your pre-married name, as it is a part of your identity that you have identified with for many years. Letting go of this name can feel like losing a piece of yourself.
  6. Preference for Your Own Surname: In some cases, individuals may simply not like their spouse’s surname. Whether it’s due to personal preference or concerns about how it may sound when paired with their first name, this can be a valid reason to keep their own surname.
  7. Outdated Traditions: Disagreeing with the patriarchal nature of changing your name being a passing of possession from your father to your husband is completely valid. Your choice should be made based on open conversations with your partner and ensuring it supports equality and respect within your relationship

If You Decide to Change Names

If you find yourself considering a name change, it’s essential to acknowledge the emotional impact it can have. Removing a name you have always identified with can feel like an upheaval, especially if it is tied to your personal or professional brand. Additionally, the paperwork involved can be overwhelming. However, many couples choose to change names because they envision a future with their new spouse that outweighs these challenges.

To make the process easier, consider utilizing services like Easy Name Change, which are specifically designed to streamline the name change process. With such resources at your disposal, the paperwork will no longer be a valid excuse to avoid making a decision. Get $5 off when you use the code LOVE2SAVE5.

Ultimately, the decision to change your name or keep your own should be based on what feels right for you and your relationship. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, and what matters most is that you and your partner are comfortable with the choice you make. Remember, it’s your name and your life, and your decision should reflect your values, aspirations, and personal journey.

How to Plan a Wedding for $10,000 or Less

When you start planning your wedding, it’s tempting to dive right into the most creative aspect—the details! But, before you begin exploring color palettes, styles, flowers, and more, press pause and decide on the budget, you (and everyone contributing financially toward your wedding day) are comfortable spending. At Honeyfund, we don’t want family, friends, social media, or any other outside opinions to pressure you into feeling like you have to follow so-called wedding planning norms or budget averages. We want to encourage you to plan a wedding that’s true to your unique vision, and your authentic budget! We’re showing you that it’s possible to plan a wedding for up to $500, $1,000, and $5,000. Today, we’re breaking down six ways you can celebrate with a $10,000 wedding budget—still far less than the national average. Meaning you’ll still have money in your pocket to take that dream honeymoon!

How to host a wedding at a venue for $10,000

You only get one shot at planning your big day, so it’s important that you prioritize what means the most to you. If you can’t imagine cutting down your guest list, opt for a fun wedding full of tradition and cut back on other areas like the decor. Maybe details like the flowers, decor and your attire are priorities when it comes to planning your big day. Then try hosting a micro wedding with fewer guests so you can dedicate more of your budget to those things! Get creative and explore other ways to stretch your $10,000 wedding budget like DIY projects, floral rental, or searching for secondhand wedding decor on Facebook Marketplace. Signing up for a Honeyfund can be another great way to raise funds for your wedding by allowing your friends and family to contribute to the things that mean the most!

Example Venue Wedding Budget: $9,705 for 25 guests

  • Invitations: $250
  • Marriage License: $100
  • Officiant: $30 when the ceremony is officiated by a family member or friend ordained via Universal Life Church
  • Photographer: $1,500
  • Flowers: $1,500 for a bouquet, boutonniere, and centerpieces
  • Attire: $1,500
  • Food & Alcohol: $3,125 including tax and gratuity, at $125/person
  • Dessert: $200
  • Music: $1,500 – Hire a DJ!

How to host a destination wedding for $10,000

If you’ve shared your Honeyfund with to your wedding guests, they probably can guess how much you love to travel! What better way to celebrate your love than with a wedding in a dreamy destination away from home. We imagine your guests feel the same way! So, plan a destination wedding with a big emphasis placed on adventure and time together with those closest to you.

Example Asheville Destination Wedding Budget: $9,530 for 6 guests

  • Home Rental: $500/night for 4 nights – $2,000
  • Marriage License: $100
  • Officiant: $30 when the ceremony is officiated by a family member or friend ordained via Universal Life Church
  • Photographer: $1,500 – Consider specifically searching for an elopement photographer! Elopement photographers in Asheville, specifically, like to capture the moment you get married. Then they like to explore with you while continuing to capture additional photos.
  • Flowers: $250 for a bouquet and boutonniere
  • Attire: $2,500 – Splurge on the dress of your dreams. But don’t be afraid to get it dirty, especially if you decide to say “We do” with mountain views!
  • Cake and Champagne: $100 – Purchase a cake from a local bakery and toast with champagne post-vows!
  • Food & Drinks – $1,250 – Plan to budget at least $250/day to enjoy meals at your rental home and out around town.
  • Excursions – $1,800 – Find adventure! Hiking the trails is free along the Blue Ridge Parkway, but you can also kayak, tour breweries, bike around town, visit the Biltmore Estate, and even take a hot air balloon ride. We imagine your crew experiencing at least one experience each day for three days.

How to host a wedding at a winery or brewery for $10,000

If hosting a traditional wedding at a venue doesn’t quite sound like you, but you still want to make sure your wedding day is 100% memorable, create an experience instead! Consider hosting your closest family and friends at a winery or brewery. Enjoy a customized tasting together, and then stay for dinner and dancing. Your day will still feel entirely celebratory, plus you will all be enjoying a unique experience together.

Example Winery or Brewery Tasting Wedding Budget: $8,000 for 10 guests

  • Invitations: $100
  • Marriage License: $100
  • Officiant: $150
  • Photographer: $1,500
  • Flowers: $1,500 for a bouquet, boutonniere, lush altar arrangements, and centerpieces
  • Attire: $2,000 – Enjoy your day in your dream dress!
  • Food & Alcohol: $2,500 including tax and gratuity, at $250/person for 10 people
  • Dessert: $150
  • Music: $0 – Plan to cue up a Spotify playlist so you can enjoy background music and your first and parent dances.

How to host a pop-up wedding for $10,000

As we’ve mentioned before, pop-up weddings tend to be a surprise for your wedding guests—they typically think they’re attending a birthday or engagement party, not a wedding. And that’s part of the fun! In addition to reciting your vows in front of a limited number of guests (think: no more than 25 people), keep the excitement going by adding a dance floor. Just because your wedding is a surprise, that doesn’t mean you can’t create a registry! A Honeyfund allows you to ask for what you really want, and your guests will love contributing.

Example Pop-up Wedding at a B&B Budget: $9,650 for 25 guests

  • Invitations: $200 – To keep your cover, make sure to send an invitation to your engagement or birthday party!
  • Marriage License: $100
  • Officiant: $150
  • Photographer: $1,500
  • Flowers: $1,500 for a bouquet, boutonniere, altar arrangements, and centerpieces
  • Attire: $2,000 – Splurge on your dream dress and source a custom (budget-friendly!) suit for the groom from SuitShop
  • Food & Alcohol: $2,500 including tax and gratuity, at $100/person
  • Dessert: $200
  • Music: $1,500 – Plan to hire a DJ!

How to host a wedding at a private home for $10,000

Did you know you can rent an Airbnb or other private home for your wedding? It’s a wonderful way to create the feeling of celebrating at a private home without the hefty price tag or a family member who would like to loan you their residence for the day. One idea is to plan a staycation and choose a rental home close to where you reside. Another idea is to plan to travel to a destination and ask up to 25 family and friends to join you (they’ll stay nearby!). Use your Honeyfund to register for travel costs, hotel stays, and activities so you can extend your trip and stay for your honeymoon!

Example Airbnb Wedding Budget: $9,250-$9,950 for 25 guests

  • Home Rental: $400-$750/night for 2 nights (depending on how many guests are staying the weekend)
  • Marriage License: $100
  • Officiant: $150
  • Photographer: $1,500
  • Flowers: $1,000 for a bouquet, boutonniere, and centerpieces
  • Attire: $1,500
  • Chair, Table, and Linen Rentals: $300
  • Food + Alcohol: $2,500 at $100/person
  • Dessert: $150
  • Music: $1,250 – Hire a DJ!
